The Director of Company C was a University graduate with a degree that included business studies. He started his business without any assistance from a business support organisation.
When he had been running his business for 8 years he had 2 employees and had just secured several lucrative contracts for local authorities. The Director decided to purchase a new vehicle and paid by cheque from his business bank account.
The cheque was paid because there were sufficient funds in the bank account at the time. However, the Director had failed to realise that he had creditors to pay. The cheques that were subsequently unpaid by the bank were his employees wages. On top of this, the bank closed his account because he had reneged on his agreement of no overdraft.
The Director approached us for help. The first thing that we did was to deliver a portion of the business start up course on a one to one basis. This helped the Director to understand some financial basics plus the fact that he had committed commercial suicide by denuding his business of working capital. We also explained the financial planning tool that would have helped him to avoid his present position and explained that winning the contracts from the local authorities was not all good news because his business would need increased working capital to fund them.
We were able to persuade another bank to take him on as a customer having assured them that training had been provided which should avoid future problems. Company C now employs 8 people and has gone from strength to strength.
